How to Define your Skin Type
Are you using products fit for your skin type?
Knowing how to define your skin type is the first step toward selecting a range of products ideally suited for your skin. Skin type and skin concern are both important concepts to finding the right skincare for your skin needs. Skin type refers to an overarching general category that your skin most commonly fits under, for example- normal, dry, combination, or oily/acne-prone. Skin concern is more specific, and indicates a specific symptom your skin is experiencing, for example- blackheads, dry patches, redness, or age spots. Understanding your general overall skin type and specific skin concerns, and how your skin adapts to certain circumstances, foods, and seasonal changes, is an important and powerful step in properly caring for your skin.
Skin types are divided into four main categories:
- Normal
- Dry
- Combination
- Oily
Here is the “bare-face method” to determine your skin type:
- Wash your face with a gentle cleanser then pat dry with a soft towel
- Do not apply any other products.
- Allow one hour or more for your skin to return to its natural state
- Observe your face and t-zone —the area of your forehead, nose, and chin; and match what you see and feel to a skin type as described below.
HUNA has 3 ranges uniquely suited for each skin type:
REVITALIZE – Age-Defying for normal/combination skin in need of a healthy revitalized glow.
CLARIFY – Blemish-Clearing and Oil-Control for oily, adult acne, congested and blemish-prone skin.
NOURISH – Calming, Redness-reducing Moisture for dry, very dry, dehydrated, sensitive and inflammatory skin.
Dry Skin will feel tight and there may be some flaking of dead skin. A dull complexion and some sensitivity may indicate you have a dry skin type.
Dry skin is largely due to genetics, environmental factors such as lifestyle & diet, hormonal changes, and climate.
The HUNA Nourish range is ideal for your dry, sensitive or inflammatory skin. HUNA recommendations for dry skin types:
To Cleanse – Nourish Cleansing Gelée + Moisture Mask
To Mask – Nourish Cleansing Gelée + Moisture Mask
To Moisturize – Nourish Calm-Moisture Face Serum, Nourish Skin Nutrition Balm, Nourish Calendula Healing Oil
Normal Skin will be well balanced and show no signs of particularly dry or oily conditions. It should feel supple and have a smooth texture. Breakouts are uncommon. Skin may appear dull or lackluster.
The HUNA Revitalize range is ideal for your normal, dull or lackluster looking skin. HUNA recommendations for normal skin types:
To Cleanse – Revitalize Cleansing Creme + Makeup Remover
To Mask – Revitalize Superfood Detox Mask
To Tone – Revitalize Botanical Face Mist
To Moisturize – Revitalize Age-Grace Face Serum
Combination Skin usually exhibits an oily t-zone —the area of your forehead, nose, and chin but your skin will be normal to dry elsewhere. If you notice two or more textures your skin type is considered combination.
Both the HUNA Revitalize and Clarify ranges are ideal for your combination skin concerns. HUNA recommendations for combination skin types:
To Cleanse – Clarify Cleansing Powder or Revitalize Cleansing Creme + Makeup Remover
To Tone – Clarify Fruit Extract Face Toner
To Exfoliate + Mask – Clarify Sandalwood Microexfoliator + Mask or Revitalize Superfood Detox Mask
To Moisturize – Revitalize Age-Grace Face Serum or Clarify Blemish-Control Face Lotion or Serum
Oily and Acne-prone Skin can look shiny or oily and feel slick to the touch in some areas. Pores may appear larger (especially in t-zone areas) and pores may likely be congested (meaning visible blackheads). Oily skin types are prone to regular acne blemishes and breakouts.
The HUNA Clarify range is ideal for your oily, congested and acne-prone skin. HUNA recommendations for oily skin types:
To Cleanse – Clarify Cleansing Powder
To Tone – Clarify Exfoliate Fruit Extract Face Toner
To Mask and Exfoliate – Clarify Sandalwood Microexfoliator + Mask
To Moisturize – Clarify Blemish-Control Face Lotion (water-based matte hydration) or Clarify Blemish-Control Face Serum (oil-based glowy moisture)
Food for thought: Using treatments that are not fit for skin type can signal your skin to react in ways that can be harmful to its overall health. Nourishing your skin with the correct skin product treatments is beautifully rewarding and will result in your best skin health ever.
Keeping the health of your skin in mind and “checking in” regularly to determine whether any adjustments to your current routine are needed will keep it well balanced and happy. I suggest following the change of seasons to check in and make small adjustments to ensure your skin is well cared for. It is common for your skin to change skin concerns or even skin type from one season to the next, and you should be adjusting your skin routine and products accordingly.
