Enzyme Exfoliation: How To Renew your Skin With Papaya & Pineapple

We’re always told about the importance of exfoliation for brighter, smoother and more radiant skin, but what you may not know is that there are a few different types of exfoliation.

While you may be more familiar with physical exfoliation, which involves the use of textured products like cloths or granulated particles like sugar or sandalwood powder to slough off dead skin cells, in this article we’ll be focusing instead on enzyme exfoliation.

This type of exfoliation is more intense, yet still gentle enough for sensitive skin and the results are ah-mazing!

Keep reading to learn more about enzyme exfoliation, as well as our two favourite skincare superfoods primed with maximum enzyme-exfoliating properties, to leave you with skin that glows for days!

What Is An Enzyme Exfoliation and How Does It Work?

An enzyme exfoliation relies on the use of fruit enzymes to provide a deep, yet gentle exfoliation, making it ideal for all skin types – even sensitive skin.

Instead of simply sloughing off dead skin cells as your regular exfoliator would, enzyme exfoliation helps to actually breakdown a protein called keratin, which the uppermost layer of your skin is primarily made up of.

This leaves you with much softer and smoother skin with a healthy, vibrant glow.

Our Favourite Fruit Enzymes For Regenerating The Skin

There are many different types of fruit enzymes available, but two of our absolute favourites would have to be bromelain from pineapple, and papain from papaya.

Bromelain

Ever eaten a pineapple and experienced a tingling sensation in your mouth?

This is the result of bromelain, which breaks down protein and can aggravate the tender skin inside of your mouth. This tingling sensation is good news for your skin though!  Bromelain helps to provide a deep-down exfoliation while helping to rebuild collagen for a firmer, more youthful complexion.

This enzyme also provides powerful anti-inflammatory benefits while helping to unclog clogged pores, making it perfect for problem skin too.

Papain

This papaya enzyme helps to exfoliate, hydrate and repair skin, and has shown huge promise in reducing the appearance of scars, as fruit enzymes help to remove damaged skin cells and stimulate the production of healthy fresh cells, thus reducing scar tissue.

Experience The Benefits Of An Enzyme Exfoliation At Home

To experience the awesome benefits of these enzymes for yourself, we highly recommend our Revitalize Cleansing Crème. This product cleanses skin to remove all traces of dirt and impurities, while moisturizing, nourishing and revitalizing your skin with bromelain, papain and other wonderful ingredients.

As a bonus tip, you can use this as a Mini Enzyme Face Mask, if applying to cleansed and dry skin. Apply a thin layer to your skin and assess how your skin is feeling to determine how long you can leave it on for. If your skin is not sensitive at all, you can leave it for up to 15 minutes, but if your skin is quite sensitive or extremely reactive, you may want to start with 5 minutes at a time and slowly work your way up.

Always be sure to follow up with a 100% natural & botanical-based moisturizer to nourish and protect skin after cleansing and treating.  We highly recommend Huna Revitalize Age-Grace Face Serum to deeply hydrate, protect with antioxidants, and nourish with vitamins & phytonutrients.

If your skin is need of a pick-me-up, especially at this crazy time of year, then try incorporating enzymes into your skin care routine – during cleansing or by treating your skin to an enzyme mask.  It’s about feeling good in your skin again.  Bring on that glow baby!

Take care and Keep well natural beauties!
